What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as an artificial tooth root to replace an extracted tooth. Dental implants are skillfully fused into the jawbone; they bond well with the body to provide a strong foundation for replacement teeth, such as dental crowns or dental bridges.
Why opt for dental implants?
People with missing teeth usually face some inconvenience in their everyday life such as trouble eating certain foods and speaking clearly. Socially too, they feel uncomfortable as it is not as aesthetically pleasing as having a wide smile with no gaps. By opting for dental implants, you can have natural-looking teeth that could last a lifetime.
Advantages over traditional dentures
Dentures have been the standard tooth replacement option over the decades. However, ill-fitting dentures can cause discomfort to the user. On the contrary, dental implants give back your smile and bring convenience to the patient in many ways:
- Dental implants are a long-lasting and superior solution for missing teeth
- Implants can be used for replacing a single tooth, multiple teeth or all teeth
- They improve chewing ability
- Patients can speak clearly without mumbling
- No need for daily maintenance
- No slipping and clicking, like dentures
- Implants boost your confidence and improve your appearance
The implant surgery procedure
After taking X-rays and scans, restorative dentistry specialists create your customized treatment plan. Next, the damaged tooth is removed and the implant, a tiny titanium screw, is placed into the gap of the missing tooth. The jawbone heals gradually, encasing the implanted metal post and grounding it securely into the jaw. An abutment is then fitted on top of the implant and the artificial tooth (a ceramic/metal/porcelain fused metal crown) is finally anchored into this connector.
